Answers: Swap a laptop hard drive

21 09 2007

A great post at Yahoo Answers covered replacing an old laptop hard drive with a new one and making the old one into a portable drive. It is a pretty simple process and so are the steps, though I would recommend going for a free alternative instead of Norton Ghost, such as Ghost for Unix (which is for windows too). The instructions are a bit vague but you could get through it pretty well with a bit of extra reading.

The fastest BitTorrent client: BitTyrant

15 09 2007

BitTyrant is a modification for Azureus that, unlike other clients, selects only the peers to connect with that will return the greatest download/upload rate, this has made downloads up to 70% faster than with a regular client.

There is, however, a lot of controversy with this client. Many people believe that it will hurt overall download speed and bittorrent as a whole by only connecting to selected peers, which would leave others in the dust. Though I’d say there’s no harm done as long as you do a bit more seeding than usual. That said, it’s probably best you only use it for painfully slow torrents. Read through the links, FAQ, and papers they provide to decide whether it’s right for you.

Get Automatix without the ticks with EasyUbuntu!

15 09 2007

Much like Automatix, Easy Ubuntu is a script (with a GUI) that will automatically download and install proprietary drivers, codecs, video players, flash, java, MS Fonts, and even skype. Unlike controversial Automatix, Easy Ubuntu uses apt, backs up any system changes made,  and won’t edit your sources.list file unless you allow it to do so.

“EasyUbuntu is an easy to use (duh!) script that gives the Ubuntu user the most commonly requested apps, codecs, and tweaks that are not found in the base distribution – all with a few clicks of your mouse.”

Though it is still in alpha, and I’d still recommend using envy for video drivers. It’s a good thing to keep in mind for the upcoming release of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon in October.

A good read: Windows is free

28 08 2007

We’re back with a new section here at Back Door Life: A good read, tidbits of readings and news that we think is, well, a good read. Here is an article written by comedian and geek Dave Gutteridge at the Tokyo Linux Users Group about the one thing people never talk about in OS debates: pirated software. I suggest giving the ZDnet article that is linked to a read as well. All in all it takes some time, but it is…a good read, and worth at least my time.

Bring your desktop with you with YouOS

12 08 2007

YouOS is a very comprehensive web operating system complete with a writer, sticky notes, browser, messenger, and a whole slew of other really well done online apps. This all seems a bit useles at first, but the point is that instead of having all these different online apps on different websites, like google docs, online messengers, sticky notes etc. With YouOS you can access them all in one place and save them to one place.

” There is a glaring weakness to all traditional operating systems, however. They are, at the root, designed to run on one computer. Extensions like NFS and remote desktop alleviate this weakness to some extent, but they do nothing to enable collaboration on a larger scale between users on different computers. Imagine what you could do if every one in the world could work and play on the same “virtual computer.”

There are several other web OS’s, but this one I have found to be the best. It feels close to Ubuntu and, while it is still in alpha, it is the least buggy of them all. Also, it’s open-source. I really like it, and besides, it’s fun using a browser within a browser within a browser within a browser…… all coded entirely in javascript.
